Toward Large-Scale Autonomous Marine Pollution Monitoring

چکیده
Marine pollution is a growing worldwide concern, affecting the health of marine ecosystems, human health, and weather patterns. To reduce underwater pollution, it critical to have access accurate information about extent pollutants, as otherwise appropriate countermeasures cleaning measures cannot be chosen. Currently, such difficult acquire existing monitoring solutions are highly laborious or costly, limited specific spatial temporal resolution. In this article, we present research vision large-scale autonomous that uses coordinated groups vehicles monitor characteristics pollutants. We highlight key requirements reference technologies establish roadmap for realizing vision. also address feasibility our vision, carrying out controlled experiments classification pollutants collaborative processing, two challenges

Lizhbeth: Toward Autonomous Toxic Algae Bloom Monitoring
With the recent increase of toxic algal blooms in lakes, biologists are looking for new sampling methods to analyze their spatiotemporal dynamics. In this paper, we present an Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) capable of achieving longterm sampling missions covering up to now a transect plane (1.5 km wide and 20m deep). The ASV is equipped with a probe which can be lowered via a winch to measure ...
متن کاملLarge-scale assessment of benthic communities across multiple marine protected areas using an autonomous underwater vehicle
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are designed to reduce threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning from anthropogenic activities. Assessment of MPAs effectiveness requires synchronous sampling of protected and non-protected areas at multiple spatial and temporal scales. We used an autonomous underwater vehicle to map benthic communities in replicate 'no-take' and 'general-use' (fishing allo...
متن کاملPollution in the Gulf: Monitoring the marine environment
M ore than 2 years after the Gulf conflict, scientists are continuing to keep a close watch on marine pollution stemming from the war. Following the conflict in early 1991, major concern was raised worldwide when an estimated four to eight million barrels of crude oil were directly released into the Persian Gulf from the Sea Island terminal in Kuwait. Such amounts clearly made it the largest oi...
متن کاملNUCLEAR AND ISOTOPIC TECHNIQUES FOR MARINE POLLUTION MONITORING A. Introduction
The greatest natural resource on the Planet, the World Ocean is both the origin of most life forms and the source of survival for hundreds of millions of people. Pollution of the oceans was an essential problem of the 20th century that was associated with the rapid industrialization and unplanned occupation of coastal zones It continues to be a concern in the 21st century. The most serious envi...
متن کاملLarge-scale sophisticated linguistic monitoring
A key means of monitoring current and evolving events is through their linguistic signatures in text-based information sources (e.g, social media like Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit). Given the vast quantities of available data, reliable automated analysis is vital for assisting human intelligence in detecting credible threats. This is especially true given both (i) the complexity of information...
